Sharapova has not had a lot of success on tour since returning from the doping ban and is still looking for a big title. On Sunday, Sharapova was up against the crowd and Barty at the Rod Laver Arena under the Australian heat and despite winning the first set, Ash Barty rode on home support and shot right back to win a three-set thriller 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and 22 minutes.Sharapova had had a great tournament so far but her accuracy deserted her against Barty, especially in the second set after which Barty produced an inspired show to down Sharapova. In the press conference after the match, Sharapova was asked about how her body holds up now that she cannot take meldonium and the former Australian Open champion was not amused.Reporter: You took meldonium legally for ten years to deal with your health problems. Now that it’s banned and you can no longer take it, is it a struggle physically to deal with the demand of a Grand Slam fortnight?Sharapova: Is there another question?Sharapova was banned three years ago for the usage of a drug called meldonium. Sharapova had been taking the drug since her early years for a health condition but she failed to keep a track of when the drug was added in the banned list of WADA. She had to face a 15-month ban and she has been trying to go deep in Grand Slam tournaments ever since her return.advertisementSharapova was also booed by the Rod Laver Arena crowd on Sunday when she took an extended bathroom break after the second set, which she lost 1-6. She was asked about the same by a journalist in the press conference and Sharapova snapped back.Sharapova: What do you want me to say to that question?Reporter: I don’t know. Just the truth, I guess.Sharapova: I think that’s a silly question to ask.Reporter: Did it affect you, though?Sharapova: (No response)On her loss to Barty despite creating chances for herself in the final set, Sharapova said, “Yeah, a different style, but a really tough style to play against. I thought she played a really great match, and I still had my chances which I didn’t take. I definitely had a let-down for many games straight, gave her that confidence, and she’s a confidence player, as well. And she’ll take it. She’s not going to back down. And she did.”Sharapova further said that she was looking to take care of her health and shoulder going ahead.”I thought I did a few things well this week. There is a lot of improvements to do. I still, as I said, still have to take care of the shoulder. You know, I need to serve better. That comes obviously, stems from the shoulder. That’s an important aspect of this year. I’ll be looking to do everything in order to keep it healthy.”Also Read | Nadal thrashes Berdych to reach quarters, Tiafoe beats Dimitrov on birthdayAlso Read | Former champion Angelique Kerber stunned in fourth roundAlso Read | Petra Kvitova storms into quarters after outclassing Amanda AnisimovaFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
