How ‘Play Gloria’ became the rallying cry of the St. Louis Blues

If you go 36 weeks from Jan. 7, that leads right up to the start of what is usually training camp — when you usually begin to look at who the next Stanley Cup champion will be. Not a bad coincidence for a team that sang it all the way to the first championship in franchise history. Jan. 7 is a significant date in St. Louis Blues lore. It’s the day Jordan Binnington made his first start in 2019. It’s also the day everything changed for a team that was last in the NHL just a few days prior. But there’s another date that is on the same level — Jan. 6, the night before. It’s the date a few Blues were hanging in a bar in Philadelphia watching the NFC wild-card game and Gloria came into their lives.”They had a DJ in the bar and whenever there was a commercial break, they would crank the tunes and all these guys from Philly would get up and start dancing around,” Joel Edmundson told stlouisblues.com’s Chris Pinkert in February. “They played this song ‘Gloria’ a couple of times, and this one guy looked at the DJ and said, ‘Keep playing “Gloria”!’ so they kept playing it. “Everyone would get up and start singing and dancing. We just sat back and watched it happen. Right there we decided we should play the song after our wins. We won the next game, we got a shutout, so we just kept on playing it.”PLAY GLORIA!!!!!!!! 🎶#WeAllBleedBlue #stlblues pic.twitter.com/P2SEKm1AtF— St. Louis Blues (@StLouisBlues) May 8, 2019BLUES WIN THE CUP: Your place for championship gear They played it after 29 regular-season wins and 16 more in the playoffs, capped by their Game 7 victory over the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final. The final few seconds inside @thejacksnyb #PlayGloria pic.twitter.com/Fh0sP91efu— Adam Kimelman (@NHLAdamK) June 13, 2019The 1982 song has swept the city of St. Louis. “Gloria” can be found on T-shirts, signs and radio stations. Edwin Encarnacion trade grades: Yankees pile on power; Mariners add long-term asset

first_imgThen is listed by Baseball-reference and Baseball America at 6-1 and 155 pounds, so there’s a lot of physical development ahead to go with his baseball development.Overall: BAt its core, this is a typical veteran-for-prospect trade. Encarnacion will make the Yankees’ lineup deeper but may not make a big contribution if the Bombers return to full health. Then could become a rotation fixture in a few years. Then again, Dipoto could move the youngster again if Seattle becomes good in a year or so and needs to acquire its own reinforcements. You never know with Dipoto. This article has been updated with both teams announcing cash considerations were included in the trade. Dipoto found a taker Saturday in the Yankees, who are sending Juan Then, a 19-year-old minor league right-hander, back to Seattle in exchange. “Back” is accurate because the Mariners signed Then out of the Dominican Republic in 2016, only to trade him to New York in November 2017 for right-hander Nick Rumbelow. Both teams announced they included cash considerations in the trade.MORE: Watch ‘ChangeUp,’ a new MLB live whiparound show on DAZN The deal, on what used to be the trade deadline date, is surprising for a few reasons. Sporting News goes through those reasons as it grades the trade:Yankees: B-The first question that comes to mind: How many DHs do the Yankees need? Giancarlo Stanton is nearing a return from the injured list and Aaron Judge may be back shortly after Stanton is activated. Those guys figure to need a lot of at-bats in the role as manager Aaron Boone tries to keep his top four outfielders healthy and sharp. That doesn’t even include DH days for catcher Gary Sanchez.Encarnacion, 36, started 45 games at first base for the M’s, his most at the position since 2016, but Luke Voit is entrenched there and DJ LeMahieu has played it in his role as a super utilityman. There would seem to be little need for Encarnacion to spell Voit when LeMahieu, a better fielder who is also carrying an .804 OPS, is already available one or two days a week. One other issue: Encarnacion bats right-handed. The Yanks, on paper at least, could use a left-handed stick for the corner infield spots. Only Brett Gardner, Aaron Hicks, Didi Gregorius and Mike Tauchman swing from the left side (and Tauchman is a candidate to be removed from the roster to make room for Encarnacion). Kendrys Morales was a lefty first base/DH option, but he failed to hit before going on the injured list this week with a calf strain. There’s a lot of time to address that area, but right now the lineup leans far to the right. Encarnacion won’t come cheaply, either, even if the Mariners kick in half of the $15 million or so in guaranteed money still owed to Encarnacion, as The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported. Much of the Mariners’ contribution might, in fact, come from the Rays, who reportedly still owe the M’s $2.5 million of the $5 million they agreed to take on as part of the aforementioned three-team trade. And, as Baseball Twitter gently pointed out Saturday night, Encarnacion doesn’t pitch. The Yankees need pitching. That’s another move, involving other players, for another day.The Yankees probably aren’t worrying about any of those things right now because they just rented a player who was leading the American League with 21 home runs and had a .241/.356/.531 slash line entering Saturday’s games. Mariners: B+Seattle continued its spring-and-summer sale with the Encarnacion move (Encarnacion joined Jay Bruce in leaving town), and it brought back a prospect it knows reasonably well. Then has yet to pitch for a full-season minor league team in his three pro seasons, but his numbers have been solid: a 2.67 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and 7.92 K/9 in 111 1/3 innings at the rookie league level. He has worked exclusively as a starter.  Edwin Encarnacion wasn’t supposed to be a Mariner for this long. Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto was reportedly trying to offload Encarnacion as soon as he acquired the slugger from the Indians in a three-team trade that also included the Rays last December. The timeline changed when Seattle got off to a hot start, but now that the M’s are accumulating Ls, Dipoto has finally cashed in.last_img read more

UFC Minneapolis: Despite back-to-back stoppage wins, Francis Ngannou insists the ‘old’ version of him is gone

first_imgBut was he really back?”No,” Ngannou said point blank to Sporting News. “I don’t have that feeling. That Francis Ngannou isn’t coming back because this now is a better Francis Ngannou. This is something different. This Francis Ngannou is much better than the one the world saw two years ago. The biggest thing is it’s all about the experience, how things happen and how you adapt to the changes because I didn’t have the experience to be able to handle my losses to Stipe and Derrick. I didn’t have a whole lot of time to learn the sport of mixed martial arts and had to learn at a very high level and very quick. That made things very difficult and a little bit hard because everything has gone by fast my entire life.”Join DAZN and watch more than 100 fight nights a yearThe 6-5 behemoth whose power has been compared to Mike Tyson’s respects that people want to see the old version of Ngannou, but the former title contender professes that he will be a different fighter when he faces Junior dos Santos at UFC Minneapolis on Saturday. Some have said Ngannou was rushed into a title opportunity with Miocic at UFC 220 back in January. However,  the 32-year-old from Cameroon isn’t ashamed to admit that getting dominated by Miocic was the best thing to happen to him because he simply wasn’t ready and needed that experience to refine his skill set. “I think everything happens in life for some reason because especially in the Stipe fight, I think that’s something that happened then that wouldn’t happen in the future because I didn’t have that experience,” Ngannou admits. “That was a mistake I wasn’t aware of. I was able to knock out people at any time. So while the Stipe fight wasn’t the right time to make a mistake, but sometimes you have to go through those things, or otherwise you’d climb higher before you fall. Right now, I don’t want to overthink about things and enjoy the process and have fun doing what I like to do and making adjustments to my game and who I am as a fighter.”A lot is on the line for Ngannou. Not only would he garner two straight wins over former heavyweight titleholders and two legends of the weight class, but could earn himself another crack at gold against the winner of the heavyweight title fight between Miocic and Daniel Cormier at UFC 241 on Aug. 17.  All it took was one punch to the man some consider to be the best heavyweight in boxing for fans to proclaim that Francis Ngannou was back.A vicious uppercut that short-circuited Cain Velasquez back in January was a shocking display of power that rinsed away a pair of underwhelming performances in back to back losses to Stipe Miocic and Derrick Lewis.  Ngannou (13-3) thinks it’s a no brainer he gets the winner of Cormier-Miocic if he gets by dos Santos. But he isn’t going to earn a second shot at glory by doing it the way he used to do things. “Absolutely,” Ngannou said. “I mean, I think that’s the only option right now because otherwise what makes the most sense.””I win on how the fight goes so I will not fall into the trap again of just looking for the knockout,” Ngannou added. “However, he wants to go is the way I’m going to go.”last_img read more

Maurice Hooker vs. Jose Ramirez: Betting odds, expert pick, how to bet on the fight

first_imgJoin DAZN to watch Hooker vs. Ramirez on July 27 and 100+ fight nights a yearMaurice Hooker vs. Jose Ramirez odds, expert pickOnline sportsbook proboxingodds.com has named Ramirez a slight favorite as of July 24 Wednesday. Ramirez comes in at -137, meaning you’d need to wager $137 to win $100. Meanwhile, Hooker is a plus +110, meaning if you bet $100, you’d net $110. To place a wager at William Hill, all you need to do is register on the homepage. Once you register, they will send you an email confirmation, and you will be able to log in and get started.Hooker won the vacant WBO title in June 2018 by defeating Terry Flanagan via split decision in Engal. Since then, Hooker has made two successful title defenses against Alex Saucedo (seventh-round TKO) and Mikkel LesPierre (unanimous decision).Ramirez beat Amir Imam in March 2018 by unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBC belt. Like Hooker, Ramirez defended his championship on two occasions: a unanimous decision nod over Antonio Orozco and winning a fun contest by majority decision over Jose Zepeda. The trash talk between Hooker and Ramirez in the lead-up has been minimal, which is refreshing to see heading into a marquee fight. Looking at their last five fights, Hooker has a better resume. Ramirez has more stoppages (two to one), but Hooker has faced stiffer competition. He made the trek to England and defeated the former lightweight champion in Flanagan, went to Saucedo’s hometown of Oklahoma City and finished him in the seventh round and went down to Mexico to beat former featherweight titlist Cristóbal Cruz in his home country. On the other side, Ramirez fought in the comfort of his backyard in three of his last five bouts, including a late rally to get by Jose Zepeda his last time out in February. For both Hooker and Ramirez, they need to get off to quick starts. Ramirez can’t get behind as he did with Zepeda. Hooker is better than Zepeda and won’t let the 26-year-old back in the fight. Ramirez is the more powerful puncher, but Hooker is the better boxer.  Perhaps the most significant factor of them all is the fact the bout is in Hooker’s home state of Texas. How does he handle it all? Can Ramirez adapt to fighting in enemy territory? Whoever can implement their style quicker is going to be the one who walks out the unified junior welterweight champion.SN Pick: Maurice Hooker. I believe Hooker is going to be able to set the tone, use the jab, and show he’s the better pugilist while making Ramirez play catchup. Hooker will make his native Texans proud, become the unified 140-pound champion and hand Ramirez his first pro loss.Best Odds: Maurice Hooker wins; William Hill (+110) Maurice Hooker (26-0-3, 17 KOs) and Jose Ramirez (24-0, 16 KOs) will clash on Saturday in a junior welterweight championship unification bout that has Hooker’s WBO title and Ramirez’s WBC title on the line from College Park Center in Arlington, Texas. And when two highly regarded gladiators prepare for combat in a fight like this, there are bets to be made. So, let’s take a closer look at Maurice Hooker vs. Jose Ramirez.last_img read more

Will Džeko shine in the former Glory in the Shirt of Roma?

first_imgPreparatory matches in which he scored goals give optimism that the captain of the BiH national team and the player of Roma Edin Džeko will shine in the former glory in the shirt of Roma this season, his second season in this club.Džeko caught up with the rhythm, he adapted well in the Giallorossi and opened doors for achieving the goal he set at the beginning of the season. Apart from goals, Džeko gives a lot to the team, which is especially important for Spalletti. Here are five reasons why Edin Džeko could mark the next season in Roma.TraditionIn his second season in Teplice (2006/2007), Džeko scored 13 goals and that was a clear indicator that this is a player of ultimate predispositions. Scouts of Wolfsburg noticed this and got down to business, the transfer was finalized and he moved to the Volkswagen Arena. First season in the Wolf’s Lair was an indication that they have brought a fantastic capital. He scored eight times and in the second season he scored unbelievable 26 goals. That was in the season 2008/2009, he was playing fantastic and he was one of those who got the most credits for bringing the title into the city of cars. In January 2011 he moved to the Island and signed for Manchester United. He scored two goals in the first semi season, but next season he shook the rival’s net 14 times and again received big credits for the title that they won.Two years later, he was amazing again and scored 16 goals. This season, City got to the top. In summer 2015, Džeko arrived to Rome. First season ended with disappointment. Although he was brought to score goals, captain of the BiH national team scored only eight times. However, the stats show that Edin is better in the second season.AdaptationMany players need to adapt. Without a doubt, Edin passed this period in the capital of Italy. He looks great in Roma’s matches lately and although goals are the pinnacle of a match, it must be noticed that the BiH national team player copes well with all parts of the game. In addition to this, Džeko is a big fighter and he always returned as a champion. Are goals in the past matches against Liverpool and Montreal an announcement of a great season? Will the tradition continue? We will see. Of course, nothing is certain in football, but everything points to the fact that a successful period is ahead of the leader of the BiH national team.MotivationEdin Džeko already has a great career behind. He won trophies, he was the champion of Germany with Wolfsburg and the champion of England with Manchester City, but he is motivated to prove himself in one of the best leagues in Europe – the Serie A.His trump card in the new season will be the experience from tough matches that he played in the shirts on the international scene and the national league. Džeko is hungry for success in the Italian league and highly motivated to prove himself. Perhaps that motivation he had during his career has propelled him to the greatness.Self-confidenceScoring goals in friendly matches as well raises self-confidence and that is an important trait for success. Džeko has been raising the norm lately, and thereby raising his self-confidence. The striker of Roma runs, breaks through the enemy lines and scores goals. If you add discipline in the game and unpredictability in the attack, he certainly makes some problems for the opponent.Support from the coachDžeko has great support from the head of the profession Luciano Spalletti. “I am very satisfied with him,” the strategist of Roma often said. Encouragement from the top means a lot for a player, it brings self-confidence and optimism. Edin has great support from the coach and that is an additional stimulus for new goals. It gives faith and strength. It can happen to every striker to fail in taking advantage of a good opportunity, but when it comes to that, what matters is support from the bench, and Džeko has it.(Source: klix.ba)last_img read more

Doesn’t this just mean that another property will be empty? Not to mention one that will arguablly be seen by more people visiting Wellington. Not exactly a beneficial move, more of a lateral move. He currently does not own the facility he is currently using. He now owns the facility that once housed the McDonalds Restaurant. The original Wellington McDonalds was built in 1989 as part of the business growth spurt on the west side of town. The corporation would then follow Wal-Mart to the east side of Wellington and built a new facility which opened in 2010.The current building has been left vacant for almost three years.“I think when people walk into the new complex, they won’t recognize the place,” Anders said. “We have totally gutted it.”Anders said he paid $100,000 for the building. He first inquired about the building in November and the deal was finalized in May.The cost of purchasing the McDonald’s building and remodeling will cost him less than the potential hike in lease rent at the current facility, Anders said.last_img read more
