One Pokémon Go player got all of Belgium banned

first_imgThe launch of Pokémon Go on Android and iOS has been rough for developer Niantic. At first, the company couldn’t keep its servers online, then it had to remove Pokémon tracking, and only now is it getting around to dealing with the endemic cheating going on in the game. Niantic has been aggressively banning cheaters, which is a good thing. One player wondered, though, could he get around that? It turns out no, he just ended up getting the entire country of Belgium banned. One of the most prominent forms of cheating in Pokémon Go is using an automated bot. Since Pokémon Go requires you to actually travel around to different areas in search of Pokémon and supplies, it takes more time and effort than other mobile games. A bot can spoof GPS and walk around for you, collecting Pokémon and items. To combat this, Niantic has been disabling the accounts of cheaters as well as banning their IP addresses.A Redditor using the handle “mewtwo_captured” decided to run a bit of an experiment. He used burner SIM cards to launch a huge number of connections to Pokémon Go from the same IP address, the address belonging to Belgian carrier Proximus. His theory was that by using this address, he could get unlimited access to the servers to run a Pokémon Go mapping service. After pinging the Pokémon Go servers a few thousand times, Niantic flagged the account as a bot and banned the IP address. This cut off all Proximus users from accessing Pokémon Go. The user deleted his or her account from Reddit, but other players have archived the posts. Niantic realized its error eventually and restored access to Proximus users the next day. This was only possible because Proximus was kind enough to offer free Pokémon Go data on pre-paid cards — it won’t be doing that anymore. See? This is why we can’t have nice things.
