Its regulation requires experience on a global scale, sophisticated real-time monitoring and response capabilities, and crucially, the ability to fight London’s corner in Europe,” said LSE chief executive Xavier Rolet. One City insider said concerns were widespread that the move was political and reflected difficulties within the coalition government with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills – which oversees the FRC – effectively grabbing power for business secretary Vince Cable. SAS posts big loss on back of EU cargo fine

first_img Show Comments ▼ SAS posts big loss on back of EU cargo fine whatsapp Share SCANDINAVIAN airlines (SAS) efforts to cut costs were overshadowed by a fine that dragged it to a third-quarter pre-tax loss of 1bn krona (£92.5m) yesterday. The airline booked 1.4bn krona in one-off charges, the biggest of which was a €70.2m (£60m) fine from the European Commission related to an investigation of European airlines accused of operating a cartel in cargo charges imposed on Tuesday.Since 2009 SAS has made efforts to cut costs by around 6.3bn krona while helping to boost its underlying business. But the airline has been badly hit by the global downturn and has struggled to compete with no-frills airline.Acting chief executive of SAS, John Dueholm, said revenues were stabilising and costs would continue to fall, though SAS expects continued price pressure through 2011.“When you have unit costs decline more than unit revenue, then of course you will have a positive impact on the underlying business,” Dueholm said.In the second quarter the company lost 600m krona mainly due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland that kept most of Europe’s air traffic on the ground for a week. whatsapp Read This NextRicky Schroder Calls Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl ‘Ignorant Punk’ forThe WrapCNN’s Brian Stelter Draws Criticism for Asking Jen Psaki: ‘What Does theThe WrapDid Donald Trump Wear His Pants Backwards? MUFG buys RBS project finance book

first_img KCS-content BANK of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ said yesterday it had agreed to buy a project finance loan book owned by Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) for £3.8bn. Earlier this month City A.M. reported RBS had entered into talks with the subsidiary of Japan’s Mitsubishi UFJ (MUFG) Financial Group over the possible sale of the book which includes loans for the M25 motorway and a gas pipeline between Russia and Germany. The sale is intended to boost the 84 per cent taxpayer owned bank’s balance sheet while also meeting European Union demands to sell assets. The proposal would include a transfer of employees, MUFG said, adding the deal is expected to be finalised by the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval. If completed, the deal would be one of the biggest acquisitions for MUFG since it paid $9bn for a 21 per cent stake in US bank Morgan Stanley at the height of the financial crisis.RBS, led by chief executive Stephen Hester, has been shedding non-core assets over the past year including the sale of 300 branches to Santander during the summer.Besides a loan RBS extended last year for the widening of London’s M25 orbital motorway, the portfolio includes financing for a pipeline that will ship 55bn cubic metres of Russian gas to Germany and the European Union in 2011 and 2012.Just last week RBS announced pre-tax losses of £1.38bn for the three months to the end of September saying market conditions remained challenging.Hester said the bank was making “good progress” in its recovery, but warned highly volatile accounting charges could “obscure our underlying story”. Since October 2008, the bank has announced 23,000 job losses worldwide. Google to hire 2,000 new staff

first_img Tags: NULL John Dunne whatsapp whatsapp Show Comments ▼ center_img Friday 19 November 2010 5:10 am Google plans to hire more than 2,000 people around the globe, bumping up its workforce as it expands into new markets and battles for talent with faster-growing rivals. The world’s largest Internet search engine, whose finance chief told investors in September that the Internet industry was waging a “war for talent,” has job openings listed for 2,076 positions on its website, according to a Reuters survey. The number of job openings is up nearly six-fold from a similar tally of job listings page conducted in March 2009.The hiring spree is taking place alongside a string of more than 20 acquisitions this year that have already helped swell Google’s ranks to more than 23,300 employees at the end of September, up nearly 18 percent since the beginning of the year.“We’ve been ramping up our hiring and the number of open jobs over the course of the last year,” Google spokesman Jordan Newman said.He would not comment on the exact number of openings, but said the jobs listings Web page was completely up to date and is monitored very carefully.Google, which controls about two-thirds of the global Internet search market, is looking for new opportunities to grow by branching out into a variety of markets, including Android smartphone software, online display advertising and Web-based productivity software. Those fledgling forays come as it fends off social networking giant Facebook, which is challenging Google for online advertising dollars and for engineering talent, as well as iPhone maker Apple Inc (AAPL.O) in the mobile market. This month, Google internally announced plans to give all of its employees a 10 percent raise in 2011, according to media reports, a move that many in the industry interpreted as an attempt to retain its best workers.Google’s current job openings are primarily for engineers and sales staffers, with roughly half of them in the United States. Some of the jobs were listed as temporary, but most appeared to be full-time positions. The job listings provide a window into the breadth of its vast operations across the globe, with openings for everything from a University Program Specialist in Senegal to a Building Ambassador at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California. The company, which has also faced increasing regulatory scrutiny in recent years, has more than 50 legal job openings around the globe. And it lists more than 50 open positions in China, including an Events Manager tasked with raising “awareness and usage” of Google products in the country, as well as a half-dozen recruiters.
